August Abel Jr., affectionately known as "Augie" to his friends and family, was a loving Husband, Father, Brother and Friend who left this world on the 14th of October, 2024, at the age of 71. Born on June 6, 1953, in Syracuse, NY, Augie lived and resided with his family in Auburn, NY. His departure has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy will endure through the cherished memories he created.
Augie was born to August Abel Sr. and Dorothy E. Stone. His father, August Abel Sr., passed away in 2007, followed by his brother John Abel in 2010 and his mother Dorothy Abel in 2012. Despite these losses, Augie's strength and compassion only grew, traits that he would be known for throughout his life.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Cheryl Abel (Lansbury), with whom he shared a lifetime of love and laughter. Their partnership was a testament to devotion and mutual respect. Augie was a proud father to his son Mark Abel, his daughter Casey Abel (Michael Jarosz) and his son Chris Abel (Michelle Abel). He was a doting grandfather to seven grandchildren: Kaylee and Patrick Clear, and Brooke, Myley, Trevor, Bree, and Brynn Abel. His role as a grandfather was one he cherished deeply, always eager to share stories, play games, and offer wisdom.
Augie's sisters, Christine Abel-Delameter (married to Dale) and Marjorie Spoto (married to Robert), along with many nieces and nephews, will remember him as a guiding light and a source of endless support. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and each member held a special place in his heart.
Augie was a proud alumnus of Liverpool High School, where he graduated in 1972. His education laid the groundwork for his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth. After high school, Augie answered the call of duty and served his country with honor and distinction in both the Navy and the Air Force. During his time in the Navy, he was a member of the Fast Attack Submarine Service and served on the USS Puffer. During his time with the Air Force, he was a member of the 174th Tactical Fighter Wing (The Boys From Syracuse) in Syracuse, NY. His time in the military was marked by unwavering dedication and a deep sense of patriotism, qualities that he carried with him throughout his life.
After his military service, Augie transitioned into a career as a Tool & Die Mold Maker. He was highly sought on with his skillset in this trade. His work ethic and integrity made him a respected figure in his professional endeavors. In addition to his professional life, Augie was deeply involved in various associations, where he applied his leadership skills and passion for helping others. Augie was a Life Member and a Past Commander of the VFW Post #1975. He was also a Past Commander with the CNYCC (Central NY County Council) and an Officer of the American Legion SK Post #1324, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and Utopia Club. In September of 2022, Augie was nominated to the NYS Veterans Hall of Fame. His contributions to these organizations left a lasting impact, and his presence will be sorely missed.
Augie's life was one of purpose and joy. He approached each day with a sense of wonder and a ready smile, inspiring those around him to do the same. His stories, often filled with humor and wisdom, will be recounted for years to come. Augie's love for life was infectious, and his ability to connect with others on a profound level was one of his greatest gifts.
As we say goodbye to August Abel Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and generosity. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Augie's journey on this earth may have ended, but the lessons he taught us and the love he shared will continue to guide us always.
