David Monroe Obituary

David K. Monroe, a steadfast pillar of strength, warmth, and ingenuity to all who had the privilege of knowing him, passed away peacefully in his birthplace of Auburn, NY, on December 18, 2024, at the age of 89. A lifelong resident, David's roots in the community were as deep and enduring as his love for his family and friends.

Born on April 21, 1935, in Auburn, David was the beloved son of Laverne Monroe and Alice O'Brien - Gleason, and he was lovingly raised with his siblings.  His early years set a strong foundation for the remarkable man he would become—one defined by resilience, dedication, and an unwavering sense of duty. David's spirit of adventure and patriotism led him to serve his country honorably as a Veteran of the Marine Corps, where he completed two tours of duty. He later utilized his skills as an electrician, a vocation where he excelled, marrying his technical acumen with his innate propensity for solving problems.

David's zest for life extended within the joys and challenges of a full family dynamic. His heart was a wellspring of love for his three daughters, Joanie Monroe, Linda (Roger) Wilcox, and Constance Mansell, who will miss his laughter. Virginia Smith Monroe, his late wife, brought love to his life with stepchildren Debbie (Tom) Conner, Cindy Cooper, and Steve Smith, each of whom David cherished and supported as his own. The Monroe family will feel his absence keenly, yet celebrate the legacy of a family patriarch who led by resounding example.

David's sister, Gerry Tanner, together with sister-in-laws Dora Monroe and Peggy Clingerman, will hold close their memories of brotherly love and kinship. His magnetic presence will be deeply missed at family gatherings, now a treasure trove of cherished stories about their brother and uncle. The family tapestry that David wove with the threads of his life was extensive—several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles will keep his spirit alive through their reminiscences. David's predeceased family members, including his wife of over 50 years Virginia, brothers Kenneth and Lavern, stepfather Edward Gleason, were welcomed reunions on his journey beyond.

An electrician by trade, David's hands were rarely still, for he was the quintessential handyman driven to fix all things broken. He approached life's challenges with the same meticulous care he gave to his craft. It was this very quality—of being resolutely handy—that best encapsulated David. With precision and care, he patched and repaired, both the tangibles around him and the unseen breaks in the lives of those he loved.

David's loyalty was as undeniable as his staunch support for the Washington Redskins, for he was a die-hard fan through every season. His unwavering dedication was mirrored in every aspect of his life, from his family and work to the stands he took and the values he upheld.

The absence of David's easy grin, the sparkle of shared understanding in his eyes, and his ceaseless pursuit of points of connection will leave a void in the lives of his dearest friends, Tom, Katy, and Amy, who considered him family. Mother of Joan and Linda - Mary. Mother of Constance - Barbara.
