Douglas Cameron Obituary

Douglas Michael Cameron, 80, passed away January 9, 2025, surrounded by the familiar comforts of home. Born in Auburn, NY, Douglas was Mount Carmel High School graduate, lifelong resident and contributing member of the community.

Douglas was a loving husband to his wife Joan M. Cameron (Zapotoski). They met at Foley’s Northwoods Inn in Old Forge, NY. Together for 56 years, they navigated the highs and lows of life, always finding joy in each other's company and the simple pleasures of life. Shopping at specialty craft shops with Joan was always a highlight, they sought out unique and meaningful treasures together which decorate their home. They enjoyed summers attending the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, time at Camp Michael at Number Four, gardening, watching college basketball, cheering at Doubledays games and family dinners. He was a caring father to his children Heather, Bradley and Michael. He was proud of them as they created their own families with Brian, Kimberly and Emily. Douglas's love for his grandchildren Elizabeth, Lily and Kian was obvious by the time well spent doing activities they all enjoyed. He is survived by his brother Gregory (Debra) and predeceased by his parents Douglas A. and Mary A. Cameron and his brother Terrence (Terri Lynn).

An alumnus of Providence College, Class of ‘66, Douglas earned a BA in Education- Social Studies, which laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to teaching and learning; a public school teacher for 35 years. His pursuit of knowledge led him to obtain an additional master’s degree in School Administration. Not one to rest on his laurels in retirement, Douglas completed a Certificate of Advanced Study in Tourism & Event Management, showing his belief in the power of continuous personal growth. Earlier in life, he was Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Douglas was an avid birdwatcher and geocacher which took him on fun adventures especially with his grandchildren. A keen photographer, Douglas captured moments of beauty and significance, freezing them in time for posterity. He published photo books with the Auburn Photography Club. His love for reading was well known and was a member of the Seymour Library book club. His music and book collection as well as personal journals and photo albums that chronicled our lives and his life's journey are for us to enjoy again and again.

Special thanks to “Carol’s girls”, for the care and good company given to Doug and Joan; new friendships that quickly felt like family, made in the past few years. He was seen as a kind, gentle person.
