Joseph McQueeney Obituary

Joseph F. McQueeney, 80, of Auburn passed away peacefully Sunday February 24, 2019 in the Commons on St. Anthony.

Joe was born in Auburn on February 1, 1939 the son of Willard and Margaret Lynch McQueeney and was a life resident of the City of Auburn. Mr. McQueeney was an US Navy veteran serving his country on the USS Saratoga CVA-60 from 1957-1961 as Petty Officer 2nd Class. Joe earned his AAS degree in Business and was retired employee of Guaranteed Parts Company of Seneca Falls, NY as their Publications Manager. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

Mr. McQueeney was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a passion for raising his bird dogs, Pepper and Corky. He was a long-time member of the Cayuga County Sportsmen’s Club. Mr. McQueeney was a treasured member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was involved in supporting youth activities, coaching baseball and serving as Scoutmaster.  Mr. McQueeney had a passion for Dixieland Jazz, owned an extensive jazz recording collection, and followed acts around the country. He was “Dr. Jazz.” He had a gift for writing, and was a frequent and admired contributor to corporate and trade publications. Finally, Mr. McQueeney loved baseball; the New York Mets have lost their greatest and most loyal fan.

Mr. McQueeney celebrated his 80th birthday this month with friends and family. He is survived by his wife the former Genevieve Hickey, his children and spouses Sandra Dec (Tim), Judith Kreher (Michael), Julia Boyd (Michael), Maureen Breen, Kevin, Joseph (Ginger), Michael (Darci) and Patrick (Tarina) McQueeney. He had 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Brother in-law David Hickey of Clyde, NY.

Mr. McQueeney was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Elizabeth, infant sister Mary Katherine and Sister Marlene McQueeney.

Family and friends are invited to attend Joe’s Memorial Mass, Saturday March 2, 2019 in Sacred Heart Church at noon, visitation with the     family from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers family has suggested contributions to Hospice of the Finger Lakes, Matthew House, Sacred Heart Church and the Elizabeth Payne McQueeney Scholarship at Cayuga Community College.

On behalf of Joe’s family, they would like to thank his caregivers for his excellent care given at the Commons and a special thank you to Norma from Hospice of the Finger Lakes.
