Thomas (Tom) Dodimead Obituary

Thomas (Tom) W. Dodimead, 80, of Auburn, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2024. He was known affectionately to friends and family as Tom, passed away peacefully surrounded by those who cherished him. Born on October 22, 1943, in Auburn, NY, Tom's journey through life was marked by service, community involvement, and the joy of sports. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and love that touched many lives.

Tom graduated from West High School in 1961 and soon after, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1965. As an electrician on the B52's, he showed precision and skill until his honorable discharge in 1969. Tom carried this discipline into his civilian career, dedicating 34 years to the NY Telephone/Verizon Company before retiring in 2003. His work ethic was admired by many and set a standard for those who worked alongside him.

The community was Tom's extended family. As a life member of the S.K. Post 1324, he held offices ranging from Commander to Sergeant of Arms and was an active member of the Bar & House Committees. His devotion to the Color Guard and Firing Squad exemplified his ongoing commitment to his fellow servicemen and women. The F.O.E. #96, Sagamore Club—where he served as President and Secretary—and the Auburn Hall of Fame, which he was inducted into in 1998, also benefited from his tireless service and leadership.

Beyond his professional and community commitments, Tom's life was enriched by sports. He was a formidable presence at the Polish Falcons Lanes, where he bowled for over five decades, scoring two perfect 300 games and numerous 700 series. As the secretary for the Walt Dodimead Memorial League for over 30 years, he honored his father’s memory and fueled his passion for the sport. Tom also dedicated 40 years to playing both fast and slow pitch softball, sharing his love of the game with friends and teammates.

Family was the cornerstone of Tom’s life. His loving devoted girl friend, Kathy Coomber, her children Tom (Sarka) Coomber and children, Justyn (Amanda) Coomber and children, Jonathan Moore and stepson, Fred Smith will forever remember his guidance and warmth. His close friends, Bill Kierst, Bob Conway and Neil Ferri, Keith and Jodi Baker, and Matt and Mindy Wedgewood and girls, members, and the color guard of the SK-Post 1324, will miss his camaraderie and unwavering support. Tom's beloved fur baby, Mia was among his most faithful companion, and she too will feel the absence of his gentle care.

Preceding him in death, Tom was reunited with his cherished wife of 35 years, Isabelle (Allen) Dodimead, his parents, and dear friends, Bob Lewis and Fred Plis, as well as his aunts and uncles and fur baby Kit Kit. Their memories continue to live through the stories shared and the lives they've touched.

Tom's spirit will be felt in the clink of a medal at a veterans’ parade, in the echo of a strike at the bowling alley, and in the crack of a bat on the softball field. His dedication to his country, his work, and his loved ones defined his character—an exemplary model of integrity, commitment, and affection.

It can truly be said that Tom made his mark wherever he went, and though his absence is deeply felt, his legacy continues to inspire. He lived a full life, love being his greatest accomplishment—the kind of love that endures in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Tom's life reminds us that dedication to one’s community and passions, combined with deep familial bonds, creates a life well-lived, resonating far beyond one's own existence.
